The total amount of chlorine, bromine, and iodine contained in 1 kg of seawater, expressed in grams, is called the chlorine content. However, it is assumed that bromine and iodine have been replaced with chlorine. The unit of chlorine content is per thousand (per mille). As the ionic composition of seawater is constant regardless of location, there is a fixed relationship between the chlorine content and salinity, and the chlorine content is usually measured and then converted into salinity.
