Gippius - Gippius (English notation)

Gippius - Gippius (English notation)

A Russian female poet and novelist. Together with her husband Merezhkovsky, she was a leading poet of the early Symbolist movement, and her salon was famous as a gathering place for Symbolist writers. Her poems are full of self-questioning about complex and difficult abstract issues, and as her representative collection of poems (1904) shows, many of her works combine intellectual play with lyricism. She also displayed her diverse talents, such as the novel The Devil's Doll (1911), which was strongly influenced by Dostoevsky, and critiques, plays, and essay collection Living Faces (1925), which she wrote under the male pseudonym Anton Kleiny. She was a fierce opponent of the October Revolution, and went into exile with her husband, dying in Paris.
