As a successor to Ernst Lubitsch, he was a master of light and witty erotic comedies, and also a master of Hollywood's "film noir" of the 1940s and 1950s. He is one of the directors of the so-called "Viennese School." Born in Vienna, he entered the University of Vienna with the intention of studying law, but dropped out after one year.
