…American film director. Also known as a screenwriter. As a successor to Ernst Lubitsch, he was a master of light and witty erotic comedies, and also a master of Hollywood's "film noir" of the 1940s and 1950s. He is one of the directors of the so-called "Viennese School." Born in Vienna, he entered the University of Vienna with the intention of studying law, but dropped out after one year. He became a newspaper reporter, and in Berlin he lived a gigolo-like life as a hotel dancer to supplement his income, while aspiring to be a film scriptwriter, and eventually collaborated on the screenplay for the semi-documentary film "The Sunday People" (1929) directed by Robert Siodmak. …
