To celebrate the 100th anniversary of American independence, French historian É. de Rabelais proposed donating the statue to America for the sake of friendship between France and the United States. With donations from the French people, sculptor FA Bartholdi (1834-1904) designed the statue, which has an iron frame covered in copper plates by G. Eiffel, and was erected on Liberty Island in 1886.
