Japanese: 街村 - がいそん（英語表記）Strassendorf; street village

A settlement formed with houses lined up densely on either or both sides of a street. A type of row settlement, Reihendorf, with a high density of settlements in a strip, and the livelihoods of the people living there are highly dependent on the street. Post towns, market towns, and temple towns that developed during the Edo period mostly show a row-like settlement form, with houses lined up on both sides of a central street. Among these, the post stations of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road form typical towns and villages. The land division is often done in an orderly manner, with residential lots divided in a rectangular pattern perpendicular to the central street.

街路に沿って，その両側または片側に民家が密に立並んで形成された集落をいう。列状集落 Reihendorfの一種で，帯状に続く集落の密集度が高く，そこに住む人々の生業は街路への依存度が高い。江戸時代に発達した宿場町，市場町，門前町などは，ほとんど中軸となる街路の両側に家が立並んだ列状の集落形態を示している。そのなかでも，東海道五十三次の宿駅は典型的な街村を形成している。土地割は中軸となる街路に直角の方向に，整然とした宅地割が短冊型に施されたものが多い。
