A city in the Transylvanian plateau in central Romania. It is located at the confluence of the Trnáve-Mare and Trnáve-Mic rivers. Population: 23,000 (1983). In Hungarian, it is called Balázsfalva. It was first mentioned in records in the 13th century, and in 1738 it became the seat of a Catholic bishopric and the educational center of Transylvania. In the 19th century, it also became a base for the Romanian liberation movement, and in 1848 the Romanian National Assembly was held there.
