Died 422 BC. Amphipolis. A Spartan general in ancient Greece. He was the most brilliant military commander in Sparta during the early Peloponnesian War. He captured the cities of Akanthus and Stagiros, as well as Amphipolis, and marked the beginning of the collapse of Athens in the north. He continued fighting after the peace treaty of 423 BC, and the following year he defeated the Athenian army under Cleon in Thrace at Amphipolis, but he himself was killed there.

古代ギリシア，スパルタの将軍。ペロポネソス戦争前期のスパルタで随一の天才的軍事指揮者。アカントスやスタギロスの諸市やアンフィポリスを攻略し，北部でのアテネの崩壊のきっかけをつくった。前 423年春の講和後も戦いを進め，翌年トラキアに派遣されたクレオンのアテネ軍をアンフィポリスで撃破したが，みずからもそこで倒れた。
