[raw]? Died 422 BC. Amphipolis. A Spartan general in ancient Greece. He was the most brilliant military commander in Sparta during the early Peloponnesian War. He captured the cities of Akanthus and Stagiros, as well as Amphipolis, and marked the beginning of the collapse of Athens in the north. He continued fighting after the peace treaty of 423 BC, and the following year he defeated the Athenian army under Cleon in Thrace at Amphipolis, but he himself was killed there.
