1856‐1924 Bulgarian politician. Born into a poor peasant family. After graduating from a vocational school in Odessa, he came into contact with socialist ideas in St. Petersburg in 1881, and in 1883 organized one of the early socialist groups in Russia. He was arrested in 1885 and deported to his home country, but he continued to work toward the spread of Marxism throughout his life, and played a leading role in the formation of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party (1891), its left wing, the Chesnyak faction (1903), and the Bulgarian Communist Party (1919). He is known as the father of Bulgarian socialism. [Hagiwara Nao] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
