Indian politician and scholar. Born in Mecca, Arabia. Studied Islamic theology. In 1898, he traveled to India and was imprisoned in Calcutta for publishing a newspaper for Muslims. He joined the Indian National Congress and led the independence movement. He opposed the partition of India and Pakistan.
