Cuauhtémoc (English spelling)
Around 1495 - 1525
The last emperor of the Aztec Empire. In modern Mexico, he is considered a national hero. He fought the final battle against the Spanish army led by Hernán Cortés, but was captured on August 13, 1521, and the Aztec Empire was thus destroyed. He was taken prisoner despite his wish to die, and is known for enduring torture to make him reveal the location of the gold. He was later hanged for plotting the plot. In 1951, bones believed to be his were discovered, sparking a heated debate over their authenticity. [Takayama Tomohiro]
