The Greek word for the Athenian polis was "tribe." In ancient Greece, the Athenian polis was a state that consisted of a number of tribes, and was a federation of tribes. In ancient Greece, tribes performed administrative and military functions. The Athenian polis was made up of four tribes (Argades, Aegikoreis, Gereontes, and Hopletes), each of which was made up of three clans (phratoria), each of which was made up of 30 clans (genos), each of which had 30 members (which could be considered 30 families).
