Meissner's plexus (English spelling)

The submucosa contains the Meissner's plexus, which extends nerve fibers to the mucosa. Duodenal glands (Brunner's glands) are abundant in the submucosa and the lamina propria, secreting alkaline mucus to play a defensive role.
