Nakahara Road

Japanese:
Nakahara Road
A road that traveled southwest from Edo, crossed the Tama River at the Mariko ferry, passed through Kosugi and Saedo in Musashi Province, Seya and Yoda in Sagami Province, crossed the Sagami River, and reached Nakahara (present-day Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture), where it joined the Tokaido at Hiratsuka. Opened in the early modern period, this almost straight road was also called the Edo Highway, and was also called the Gosū Highway because vinegar, a specialty of Nakahara, was transported to Edo. It is said that Tokugawa Ieyasu passed through it when he entered Edo, and he continued to use it for falconry and other activities, and palaces were built in Kosugi and Nakahara as accommodation facilities. As the Tokaido was improved, traffic volume decreased and the palaces were abandoned, but they continued to function as a route for transporting goods. In 1671, a dispute arose between Saedo and Nakayama over the relay of baggage.
