An industrial city in Hunedoara County in western Romania. It is located in southwestern Transylvania, at the southern foot of the Western Carpathian Mountains. Population 71,380 (2002). A fortress was built in Roman times. A key transportation location, it flourished as a trading city from the 13th century onwards. The surrounding area is rich in iron ore and coal, and at the end of the 19th century blast furnaces were built, turning it into a steel city. Industries such as steel, coal chemistry, building materials, and wood processing have developed. Remains include Hunedoara Castle from the late 14th century and a 15th century church.
