Toga. A wrap-style outer garment commonly worn by ancient Romans. A crescent-shaped piece of fabric with a long diameter about three times the height of the wearer's body was worn as a robe with elaborate technique. Its origin is unknown, but a similar style was seen in Etruria around 5000 BC, and it has been pointed out that it is similar to the ancient Greek himation and the present-day Indian sari. Colors and decorations were differentiated according to rank and position. Representative types included the toga picta, a reddish purple ground with gold embroidery for emperors and generals, the purple toga travea for ceremonial occasions, the toga pretexta, a white ground with reddish purple linear trim for official officials, the white toga candida for candidates for office, the unbleached toga pura for ordinary men, and the black or brown toga pulla for mourning.
