Tarle, Evgenii Viktorovich
Born: November 8, 1875 in Kyiv
Died January 5, 1955. Historian of the Soviet Union, Moscow. He was a professor at Yuriev University, St. Petersburg University, and Moscow University, and was known early on as a socio-economic historian of the French Revolution and the First Empire. His doctoral thesis was Classe ouvrière en France à l'époque de la Révolution (2 volumes, 1909-11). He later studied the working class in the early days of mechanized production, but after publishing Napoléon (36) and Germinal et Prairial (37), he devoted himself to the study of Russian history. He was a three-time recipient of the Stalin Prize.
