Japanese: シュウィーツ - しゅうぃーつ（英語表記）Schwyz

The cantons (states) that make up the Swiss Confederation and their capitals. The city has a population of 13,000 (1992). The canton has an area of 908 km2 and a population of 122,000 (1996). It had been part of the Habsburgs' domain since 1173, but in 1240 it gained a "free charter" by supporting Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II's Italian policy. In 1291 it formed a "perpetual alliance" with Uri and Unterwalden, becoming the core of the formation of the Swiss Confederation. In 1315, it attacked the Habsburgs with force and annihilated their elite knight army at Morgarten, making its name known throughout Europe.
