Chemistry is an academic field that explores the structure, properties, and reactions of matter. This is a branch of chemistry that focuses on the study of physical properties. Physical properties refer to the physical properties of matter, whether it is a gas, liquid, or solid, but it is often called physical properties chemistry when dealing with the physical properties of solid and liquid condensed systems. Representative examples of these physical properties include electrical properties such as electrical conductivity, charge transfer, and effective mass of electrons, optical properties such as absorption, emission, and reflection of light by matter, magnetic properties (magnetism) such as ferromagnetism and diamagnetism, mechanical properties such as mechanical strength and viscoelasticity, thermal properties such as specific heat and thermal conductivity, and dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and dielectric loss.

化学は物質の構造，物性，反応を探究する学問分野である。このうち，とくに物性研究に焦点を合わせて研究する化学の一分野をいう。物性とは，気体，液体，固体を問わず，物質の物理的性質を意味するが，とくに固体，液体の凝縮系についての物理的性質を取り扱う場合に，物性化学と呼ぶ場合が多い。これら物理的性質としては，電気伝導度，電荷の移動，電子の実効質量などの電気的性質，物質による光の吸収，発光，反射などの光学的性質，強磁性，反磁性などの磁気的性質(磁性)，機械的強度や粘弾性などの力学的性質，比熱，熱伝導などの熱的性質，さらに誘電率，誘電損失などの誘電的性質などが，その代表的なものである。
