Born in the first year of the reign of Empress Suiko. Prince Hikohito no Oe. His mother was Princess Nukatehime (Princess Tamura). After the death of Empress Suiko, he competed with King Yamashiro no Oe for the throne, and was recommended by Soga no Emishi to ascend to the throne. His empress was Princess Takara (later Empress Kogyoku and Empress Saimei). Inukami Mitasuki, Yakushi Enichi and others were sent as the first Japanese envoys to Tang China. He also deepened ties with Baekje and Silla. He died on October 9, 13th year of the reign of Emperor Jomei. He was 49 years old. His grave is in Osaka no Misasagi (Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture). His given name was Tamura. His other names were Emperor Okinagatarashihihironukanosumeramikoto, Emperor Takaichi, and Emperor Okamoto.
