Day of Atonement

Japanese: 贖罪日 - しょくざいび（英語表記）Day of Atonement

A translation of the Hebrew yom kippur. The most solemn Jewish holiday. It is held on the 10th day of the month of Tishre, which is the first day of the Jewish calendar (September or October of the solar calendar). According to Leviticus 16 in the Old Testament, the high priest offers a bull to atone for the sins of himself and the priestly family, and then offers a goat to atone for the sins of the people. Next, he places all the sins of the people on a goat selected for the wilderness demon Azazel and sends it into the wilderness. This goat is called the scapegoat.

ヘブライ語yom kippurの訳語。ユダヤ教のもっとも厳粛な祭日。ユダヤ暦の正月に当たるティシュレ月10日(太陽暦の9月か10月)に行われる。旧約聖書の《レビ記》16章によると，大祭司は自分自身と祭司家の罪を贖（あがな）うための雄牛を捧げたのち，民衆の罪を贖うためヤギを捧げる。次に，荒野の悪霊アザゼルのために選ばれたヤギに，民衆のすべての罪を背負わせて荒野に送る。このヤギを〈贖罪のヤギ(スケープゴート)〉と呼ぶ。
