A method of electric heating that utilizes Joule heat generated by a conductor connected to a power source. Examples include electric stoves and pottery painting kilns, which use inexpensive iron-chromium wire as a heating element. Metal heating elements include nichrome (heating temperature below 800°C), molybdenum, and tungsten (below 3000°C), while nonmetallic heating elements (for high-temperature heating above 1000°C) include carbon, silicon carbide, and kanthal. Resistance furnaces are made of firebricks and are installed on the inner walls of the furnace. There are also salt melting furnaces, in which the object to be heated is immersed in molten salt.
