Morning and evening fortune telling - Asake Yuuke

Japanese: 朝占夕占 - あさけゆうけ

...Fortune telling by standing at a crossroads and listening to the words of passersby to judge their fortunes. As its other name, Asake-Yuke, suggests, it was performed in the morning or evening when people were not easily seen, and divine will was sensed in the unconscious words of passersby, which were then taken as divine revelation. The origins of this practice date back to ancient times, as can be seen in Volume 11 of the Manyoshu, which states, "When Tamaboko's Michiyuki Uranae is read..."

[Bridge Fortune Telling]
Bridge divination involves standing on or near a bridge and reading the words of passersby to tell fortunes. Bridges and waterside areas were believed to be places where gods, especially the water god, appeared, and people stood there at dawn or dusk when there were few people on the roads to ask for divine will, so it was also called asake-yuke (morning and evening divination). The name "whispering bridge" comes from the belief that if you crossed the bridge seeking a fortune, you would receive a divine message.
