Montand - Yves Montand

French chanson singer and film actor. Born in Monsummano, near Milan, Italy. His real name was Ivo Livi. Because he was Jewish, his family was expelled by the Fascists, and he moved to Marseilles at the age of two, where he grew up. He became a French citizen at the age of five. He showed talent for singing from an early age, and appeared on TV shows such as Nodo Jiman. He made his Paris debut in 1944 at the ABC Theatre, and after that, Piaf recognized his talent and gave him many pieces of advice. He established his fame with the success of his one-man show recital at the Etoile Theatre in 1949. His repertoire is extremely wide, ranging from chanson realist songs to literary chansons, social songs, and songs full of light rhythm and humor inherited from Trenet. His representative works include "Autumn Leaves," "Galérian," "In Paris," and "Luna Park."

He began appearing in films in 1945, and showed particularly skilled acting in The Wages of Fear in 1952, after which he became an internationally active film actor. Other film appearances included The Witches of Salem (1956) with Simone Signoret (1921-1985), whom he married in 1951, and Costa-Gavras' trilogy Z (1968), Confessions (1969), and Martial Law (1972). He was also known for his active participation in political and peace movements.

フランスのシャンソン歌手、映画俳優。イタリアのミラノに近いモンスマーノに生まれる。本名Ivo Livi。ユダヤ人のため一家はファシストに追放され、2歳のときにマルセイユに移住し、以後同地で育つ。5歳のときにフランスに帰化。幼いときから歌の才能を示し、のど自慢などにも出ていた。1944年ABC劇場に出演してパリ・デビューを果たし、その後ピアフに才能を認められ、数々の忠告を受けるようになる。1949年にエトアール劇場で行ったワンマン・ショー形式のリサイタルの成功により、名声を確立した。レパートリーはシャンソン・レアリストの歌から、文学的シャンソン、社会派の歌、トレネ譲りの軽妙なリズムとユーモアにあふれた歌に至るまできわめて広いものがある。代表的名唱に『枯葉』『ガレリアン』『パリで』『ルナ・パーク』など。

　映画出演は1945年からで、とくに1952年の『恐怖の報酬』で巧みな演技をみせ、以後映画俳優として国際的に活躍するようになる。そのほかの映画出演に、1951年に結婚したシモーヌ・シニョレSimone Signoret（1921―1985）と共演の『サレムの魔女』（1956）、コスタ・ガブラス監督の三部作『Z』（1968）、『告白』（1969）、『戒厳令』（1972）など。さらに、政治・平和運動などへの積極的な参加でも知られた。
