...A descendant of Fuyutsugu of the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan. A distinguished family. The family name comes from the fact that they lived in Karasuma, Kyoto. For this reason, many nobles bore the name Karasuma, but it was not until the Muromachi period, when Toyomitsu, the second son of Gon Dainagon Hino Sukeyasu, inherited the name. In the Edo period, they were first awarded 1,500 koku, and later 954 koku. For generations, they served the Imperial Court as a family of waka poets, and produced many excellent poets.
