…In the 17th century, art dealers flourished in Paris under the reign of Louis XIV, and art collecting spread to wealthy citizens. In Italy and the Netherlands, British and French travelers bought up art. In 1766, James Christie (1730-1803) opened the first auction in London, and Sotheby's soon began holding auctions as well. The catalogs of both companies are valuable indexes of early modern art. In the 19th century, the number of public art museums and art exhibitions increased, and capitalists and businessmen began collecting art for investment and speculation, replacing the royal courts and churches that had previously been patrons of artists. This led to the emergence of influential art dealers such as Georges Petit, Wildenstein, Seligman, and Naedler. …
