It is the capital of the Tarn-et-Garonne department in southern France. It is located 52 km north of Toulouse, on the Tarn, a tributary of the Garonne. It has a population of 51,855 (1999). It was founded by the Count of Toulouse in 1144 and developed in the 14th century. It became a British territory during the Hundred Years' War, and a base for Protestants (Huguenots) during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century. It is a center of grape cultivation and a distribution center for white wine, grains, and forced vegetables. It is also home to industries such as furniture, textiles, electricity, and food products (dairy products). It is home to the Church of Saint-Jacques, famous for its 13th century bell tower, a 14th century bridge, and Notre Dame Cathedral (completed in 1739). It is the birthplace of the painter Ingres and the sculptor Bourdelle, and is home to the Ingres Museum.
