A commercial and industrial city in Opole Voivodeship in southwestern Poland. Population 39,900 (1995). Located 40 km southeast of Wroclaw, it developed on the left bank of the midstream Oder (Odra) River. It is an old city with a settlement dating back to the 11th century, and in the 14th century it became the leading commercial city in the Silesia region. Many buildings from the 14th to 16th centuries remain, including Gothic churches and town halls, but 80% of the city center was destroyed during World War II. ポーランド南西部,オポーレ県の商工業都市。人口3万9900(1995)。ブロツワフの南東40kmにあり,オーデル(オドラ)川中流左岸に発達する。11世紀に集落の存在が認められる古い都市で,14世紀にはシロンスク地方第一の商業都市となった。ゴシック建築の教会や市庁舎など14~16世紀の建物が多く残るが,市街地の8割が第2次世界大戦中に破壊された。化学,農業機械,小型モーター,皮革,食品加工,製糖の各工業が立地する。
