An Indian living in the border area of Guyana and Brazil in northern South America. Population: about 700. However, it is thought to be a mixture of three tribes other than the Waiwai that are similar in language and culture. Their language belongs to the Caribbean family. The tribe's name is a self-proclaimed one, but to the neighboring Arawak-speaking Wapishana people, it also means manioc, which is similar to their skin color. Contact with whites began in 1837. They mainly hunt with bows and arrows, and use curare poison to kill arboreal animals. They do not use blowguns. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
