The name of the Zhou dynasty after the capital was moved from Haojing to Luoyi (present-day Luoyang) in the east. The move to the east, as opposed to the Western Zhou dynasty, was made during the reign of King You to avoid the invasion of the Dogrong. After the move to the east, the authority of the Zhou dynasty declined as various feudal lords established their bases in various parts of the Central Plains, and the dynasty entered a period of war, the first half of which is called the Spring and Autumn Period, and the second half the Warring States Period.

首都を鎬京 (こうけい) から東方の洛邑（現在の洛陽）に移した（東遷）以後の周の呼称。西周に対していう
東遷したのは，幽王のとき，犬戎 (けんじゆう) の侵入を避けるため。東遷後は諸侯が中原の各地に割拠して周室の権威は衰え，前半を春秋時代，後半を戦国時代と呼ぶ戦乱の時代となった。
