A medieval samurai family in Shimotsuke. They called themselves the Kiyohara clan, and together with the Mashiko clan, which shared the surname Ki, they were known as the Ki-Ki party under the Utsunomiya clan, a powerful clan in Shimotsuke Province. It is said that the clan began when Takashige, the son of Kiyohara Takasumi, was exiled to Shimotsuke Province and lived in Ouchi-sho, Haga County. Haga Jirodayu Takachika accompanied Utsunomiya Asatsuna in the conquest of Oshu in 1189 (Bun'ei 5), and was praised by Minamoto no Yoritomo for his achievements. During the civil war between the Northern and Southern Courts, while Utsunomiya Kintsuna served the Southern Court, Haga Zenka supported Kintsuna's son Ujitsuna and fought bravely under Ashikaga Takauji. Due to his achievements, Ujitsuna was appointed Shugo of Echigo and Kozuke, and Zenka sent his sons Takasada and Takaie to Echigo as deputy Shugo.
