The four legal codes, Li, Ling, Ge, and Shi, were like the Six Codes issued by successive governments, originating in the Warring States period and reaching their most complete status during the Tang dynasty, but after the Song dynasty, they underwent changes, lost their importance, were replaced by new codes, or changed their formal names and lost their former appearance. However, the Li was restored in the Ming dynasty as the Great Ming Code, and then as the Great Qing Code at the end of the Qing dynasty. The oldest criminal code that can be seen today is the Qin Code, and among the more than 1,000 bamboo slips discovered in a Qin dynasty tomb in Suihudi, Yunmeng County, Hubei Province in 1975, most of the documents were political and legal, except for two divination books, and several types of Qin Codes were found to have been included (Suihudi Qin Tomb).

　律･令･格･式なる4種の法典は歴代の政府が発布した六法全書のごときもので，古くは戦国時代に淵源し，唐代に至って最も完備されたが，宋以後変化が起こり，あるいはその重要性を失って新出の法典に座を譲り，あるいは形式名称を変えて旧面目を失うものが多いなかに，ただ律は明代に復興して大明律となり，さらに大清律となって清朝末期にいたった。　現今目睹しうる最古の刑法である律は秦律であり，1975年湖北省雲夢県の睡虎地で秦代の墓から1000余枚の竹簡を発見した中に，占卜書2種を除くほかはおおむね政治，法律に関する文書であり，数種類の秦律が含まれていることがわかった(睡虎地秦墓)。…
