In Japanese history, this refers to political rule exercised by the samurai class with their own power and organization. The Taira clan government at the end of the Heian period was a samurai government, but it did not have the power and organization of the samurai class and collapsed soon after, so it is omitted. The period begins with the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate, and ends with the Meiji Restoration after four periods: the Kamakura shogunate, the Muromachi shogunate, the Azuchi-Momoyama government, and the Edo shogunate. During this 700-year period, except for the Azuchi-Momoyama period, the shogunate was organized by the Seii Taishogun. In opposition to the court noble government, the samurai government established the Buke Law, developed a master-vassal system under the head of the samurai family, and expanded its control over the entire country.
