Shimozawa Kan - Shimozawa Kan

Japanese: 子母沢寛 - しもざわかん
Shimozawa Kan - Shimozawa Kan

Novelist. Born on February 1, 1892, in Atsuta Village, Ishikari County, Hokkaido (present-day Ishikari City). His real name was Umedani Matsutaro. He had little connection with his parents and was raised by his grandparents. The painter Migishi Kotaro was his half-brother. His grandfather Umedani Jujiro (known as Saito Tetsugoro) was a member of the Shogitai corps who was defeated and settled in Atsuta. After attending Hokkai Middle School, he graduated from the Faculty of Law at Meiji University in 1914 (Taisho 3). He joined the Kushiro Mainichi Shimbun. In 1913, he moved to Tokyo and joined the Yomiuri Shimbun, where he became friends with Chiba Kameo, Sawada Busho and others. In 1926, he was transferred to the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun. He reconstructed historical facts and rumors through on-site investigations, and completed the trilogy "Shinsengumi Shimatsuki" (1928), "Shinsengumi Ibun" (1929), and "Shinsengumi Monogatari" (1932), which depicted the real lives of Shinsengumi soldiers. Since 1933 (Showa 8), he has been a full-time writer. He won the 10th Kikuchi Kan Prize (1962) for a series of works that are dotted with elegies for the surviving retainers of the late Edo period and Edo, including "Nige Mizu" (1959), which tells the story of Takahashi Deishu's life, "Oyakodaka" (1955-56), and "Otoko Taka" (1960), which depict the father and son Katsu Kokichi and Rintaro (Kaishu). His collection of essays, "Futokoro Techo" (1961), is also known as a well-received work. He passed away on July 19, 1968.
