[Died] July 18, 1591. Prague Austrian composer. His real name was Jacob Hándl. He started out as an Austrian court singer, then served the Bishop of Olmütz in 1579, and in 1585 became the choirmaster of St. John's Cathedral in Prague. He was a Venetian-style composer, and excelled in colorful composition techniques. His four-part motet "Behold, How the Just Died" was adapted for Handel's "Funeral Anthem." In addition to 16 masses, he composed many church music pieces, including motets.

Roman elegiac poet and politician. Said to be the founder of Latin elegiac poetry, he had a great influence on Virgil, Tibullus, Propertius, Ovid, and others, and was revered as a great poet. He was appointed the first governor of Egypt under Emperor Augustus, but fell out of favor with the emperor and was recalled, after which he committed suicide. Of his many works, only one line remains.

[Died] 253. Interamna Roman Emperor (reigned 251-253). Descendant of an Etruscan noble family. Served Emperor Decius and ascended to the throne after his death. He made peace with the Goths, but when the Goths attacked again in 253, the Roman army in Moesia chose their commander, Aemilianus, as emperor. Gallus appealed to Valerian, commander of the upper Rhine army, for help, but was killed before he could reach the aid.

Roman soldier of the 1st century BCE. He served under Emperor Augustus and was a friend of Strabo. He led an expedition to Egypt under Augustus' orders, after Augustus believed the exaggerated reports of Felix's wealth in Arabia, but the expedition failed due to the betrayal of the Nabataean Silaeus.

Roman politician. He became consul in 8 BC. Two years later he became governor of Asia. He angered the Emperor Tiberius, and was arrested in 30 AD at the age of 71. He was imprisoned for three years and then starved to death.

Roman statesman and soldier of the 1st century BC. After his expedition to Cimmeria, he served as governor of Asia and Africa. He held the title of governor of Britain from 58 to 52 BC.

ローマのエレゲイア詩人,政治家。ラテン語エレゲイア詩の創始者といわれ,ウェルギリウス,チブルス,プロペルチウス,オウィディウスらに多大の影響を与え,大詩人と仰がれた。アウグスツス帝のもとで初代エジプト総督に任じられたが,帝の不興をこうむり召還され,自殺した。多くの作品のうち,わずか1詩行が残っている。
