Dalmatian [species] (English spelling)

A domestic dog that originated in Yugoslavia (illustration). It is characterized by a beautiful pattern of black or liver-colored coin-shaped spots scattered all over its body against a short white background. It was widely distributed in ancient Europe, but its exact place of origin is unknown. Its name comes from the Dalmatia region facing the Adriatic Sea, where it was most numerous. It was loved by people of all walks of life in ancient Europe, as a guide dog for nobles' carriages, a mascot for firemen, a guard dog for barracks, a hunter's retriever, a gypsy dog, and a circus dog, and is known as the most practical of all pure breeds.
