This is one of the oldest biographies of St. Francis of Assisi, compiled around 1300 based on a record of his master's words and deeds by one of his disciples, the friar Leo. It portrays Francis, who is said to be the closest to Christ among all the saints, with a simple and moving brushstroke, as he resolved to live in imitation of Jesus Christ as told in the Gospels. Francis taught that followers of Christ must renounce their own will, desires, and all possessions, and he particularly emphasized complete poverty. However, during his lifetime there were already compromises being made to relax the rules regarding poverty, and Leo, concerned about this, tried to clarify his master's true intentions.

アッシジの聖フランチェスコの最古の伝記の一つで，愛弟子のひとり修道士レオが師の言行を記録したものにもとづいて1300年ころまとめられた。福音書の伝えるイエス･キリストにならって生きることを決意し，もろもろの聖人たちのなかで最もキリストに近いと称せられるフランチェスコの姿を素朴で感動的な筆で描き出している。フランチェスコはキリストに従う者はみずからの意志，欲望，すべての持物を放棄しなければならないと説き，とくに完全な清貧を強調したが，彼の存命中すでに清貧に関する会則を緩和しようとする妥協的な動きがあり，レオはそのことを憂慮し，師の真意をあきらかにしようとつとめている。
