Wolfgang Fortner

German composer. He studied composition at the Leipzig Conservatory in his hometown and musicology at the University of Leipzig. He taught at the Church Music School in Heidelberg (1931-54), the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold (1954-57), and the State Higher Music School in Freiburg (1957-72), where he mentored such great composers as Henze. He also organized the Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra (1935) and organized a series of concerts called Musica Viva, in which he endeavored to introduce contemporary music. After World War II, he wrote works using the twelve-tone technique. His works include the ballet The White Rose (1949) and the opera Blood Wedding (1956).

ドイツの作曲家。生地のライプツィヒ音楽院で作曲を、ライプツィヒ大学で音楽学を学ぶ。ハイデルベルクの教会音楽学校(1931~54)、デトモルト北西ドイツ音楽アカデミー(1954~57)、フライブルクの国立高等音楽学校(1957~72)で教鞭(きょうべん)をとり、ヘンツェらを育てた。一方ハイデルベルク室内管弦楽団を組織(1935)するかたわら、Musica Viva(ムジカ・ビーバ)と名づけた一連のコンサートを催し、現代音楽の紹介に努める。第二次世界大戦後は十二音技法による作品を書いている。作品にバレエ『白いばら』(1949)、オペラ『血の婚礼』(1956)など。
