German composer. He studied composition at the Leipzig Conservatory in his hometown and musicology at the University of Leipzig. He taught at the Church Music School in Heidelberg (1931-54), the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold (1954-57), and the State Higher Music School in Freiburg (1957-72), where he mentored such great composers as Henze. He also organized the Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra (1935) and organized a series of concerts called Musica Viva, in which he endeavored to introduce contemporary music. After World War II, he wrote works using the twelve-tone technique. His works include the ballet The White Rose (1949) and the opera Blood Wedding (1956).
