Series - Sosho

Japanese:
Series - Sosho

A collection of works related to a certain field or subject is collected and published in a planned manner, and is also called an "XX series." In foreign languages, it is called series (English), série (French), Reihe, Gesammeltung (German), or library (English), bibliothèque (French), or Bibliothek (German). Recently, works in the form of a series are also called complete works, but they must be distinguished from a "complete works," which is a collection of the works of an individual. Selections made for the convenience of research and reading, such as pocket editions that collect classics widely, shinsho editions that collect new works, and paperbacks, are published continuously with no set end date.

In China, book series began around the Southern Song Dynasty (12th century), and in the 18th century, rare books and lost classics were collected and collected. The largest book series was Emperor Qianlong's "Siku Quanshu" (Complete Collection of the Four Companions), which had over 10,200 copies and 34,000 volumes, and was copied and placed in the Eight Pavilions in the North and South (1733-1782). In Japan, Hanawa Hokiichi's "Gunsho Ruiju" (Collection of Collected Works of Gunsho Ruiju) was published between 1779 (An'ei 8) and 1822 (Bunsei 5) with over 1,600 copies and over 2,000 volumes. Until the Meiji and Taisho periods, academic book series were the norm, but in January 1927 (Showa 2), Kaizosha's "Complete Collection of Modern Japanese Literature" and Shinchosha's "Complete Collection of World Literature" were published in yen books, and book series entered the era of mass sales, which led to the current era of competition in paperbacks.

Japanese:

外国語ではseries(英語)、série(フランス語)、Reihe, Gesammeltung(ドイツ語)、またはlibrary(英語)、bibliothèque(フランス語)、Bibliothek(ドイツ語)などという。
