Haeju - Kaishu

Japanese:
Haeju - Kaishu

A city in Hwanghae Province, North Korea. Facing Ganghwa Bay, the city is bordered by Suyangsan (899m) to the north and Namsan (122m) to the south, with a slight bowl-shaped opening on both the east and west sides. Haeju was originally called Gojuk, but during the reign of King Wang Geon of the Goryeo Dynasty (940), it was renamed Haeju because it faces the ocean. At the time, it was a thriving trade center with China, but in 1906 it was left out of the newly constructed Gyeongui Line (Seoul-Sinuiju), and its development was delayed. Later, the Yellow Sea Line was opened, and with the grain-producing areas of Yeonbaek and Jaeryeong Plains and the large croaker fishing grounds of Yeonpyeong Island in front of it, it became a major distribution center for goods in Hwanghae Province. In 1981, Hwanghae Province was separated into North and South Provinces, and Hwanghae became the central city of South Province. The city is home to the Provincial People's Committee, National Hospital, Haeju Medical University, National College of Education, a smelter, and a cement factory. As an ancient capital, it has many famous historical sites, including the Buyongdang Hall built in 1526, Seokbingdong, Haeju Nine-Story Pagoda, and Baekje Cheongpungbi Monument.
