A general term for the novels about the Forsyte family by British author J. Galsworthy. It consists of three parts: The Forsyte Saga (1922), Modern Comedies (1929), and The Metamorphosis of the Forsyte Family (1930). It is a major chronicle of the British bourgeoisie from the end of the Victorian era through World War I to the general strike of 1926, a time of crisis for British capitalism. Its tone is certainly critical of traditional Victorian materialism and emphasizes a free spirit, but from the second part onwards it becomes somewhat more conservative.
