Heavenly King - Tenno

Tenno-machi was formerly a town in Minamiakita County, in the western part of Akita Prefecture. It now occupies the western part of Katagami City. Tenno-machi was incorporated as a town in 1951 (Showa 26). In 2005 (Heisei 17), it merged with the towns of Showa and Iidagawa to become a city, forming Katagami City. The area is served by the JR Oga Line and National Route 101. It faces the Sea of ​​Japan to the south and west, and the Hachirogata Lake Adjusting Pond to the north and east, and occupies the Tenno Sand Dunes, which act as a land bridge connecting the Oga Peninsula to the mainland. Rice paddies are found in the low-lying marshes between the rows of sand dunes and on the reclaimed land in front of Hachirogata Lake, and pears, grapes, and vegetables are grown on the sand dunes. Nori seaweed is also cultivated in the Hachirogata Lake Adjusting Pond. The southern part borders Akita City, and the coast along the Sea of ​​Japan is part of the Akita Bay Area New Industrial City. The Tounin Ceremony (Tōnin Ceremony) at Toko Yasaka Shrine is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

秋田県西部、南秋田郡にあった旧町名（天王町(まち)）。現在は潟上(かたがみ)市の西部を占める地域。旧天王町は、1951年（昭和26）町制施行。2005年（平成17）昭和、飯田川(いいたがわ)の2町と合併して市制施行、潟上市となった。JR男鹿(おが)線、国道101号が通じる。南、西は日本海、北、東は八郎潟(はちろうがた)調整池に面し、男鹿半島と本土を結ぶ陸繋(りくけい)的な天王砂丘を占める。砂丘列間の低湿地や八郎潟の地先干拓地に水田があり、砂丘上ではナシ、ブドウ、野菜が栽培される。八郎潟調整池でのノリ養殖なども行われる。南部は秋田市に接し、日本海沿岸は秋田湾地区新産業都市の一部になっている。東湖八坂神社のトウニン行事（統人行事）は国指定重要無形民俗文化財。
