A silver mine opened in Innai, Ogachi County, Dewa Province (Innai Ginzan-cho, Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture). It was discovered in 1606 (Keicho 11) by Murayama Sobei and others, and became directly managed (jikiyama) by the Akita Domain. Until 1619, it prospered as a mining town with a population of 10,000, with an annual silver tax of over 200 kan. During the Genna and Kan'ei periods (1615-1644), the silver tax fluctuated between 150 and 50 kan, and then gradually declined. In the early days, the mountain magistrate Umezu Masakage attempted to establish overall mining administration, but in 1725 (Kyoho 10), it changed from a jikiyama to a ukeyama, and became a contract mine for prospectors. After 1817 (Bunka 14), the mine was opened to the public again, and production increased, exceeding 1,000 kan of silver and 30 to 40 kan of gold per year for 10 years from 1833 (Tenpo 4). After the Meiji period, it was managed by Ono-gumi and then by the Ministry of Public Works, and in 1885 (Meiji 18), it came under the management of the Furukawa Mining Company (now Furukawa Co., Ltd.), and at one point annual silver production reached 4,100 kan, but was suspended in 1921 (Taisho 10), and operations were resumed thereafter, but closed again in 1954 (Showa 29).
