Hokke Ikki - Hokke Ikki

Japanese:
Hokke Ikki - Hokke Ikki
An uprising by Nichiren sect (Hokke sect) followers, mainly consisting of townspeople in Kyoto, during the Sengoku period. In the early Tenbun era (1532-1555), Nichiren sect took root among the townspeople of Kyoto, and followers frequently staged uprisings. In 1532, Hosokawa Harumoto used the power of the Hokke uprising to burn down Yamashina Honganji Temple in order to suppress the Ikko sect followers. Nichiren sect followers were also defiant towards Enryakuji Temple, so in 1536, 60,000 Enryakuji followers burned down 21 Nichiren sect temples, destroying the Hokke uprising. After this burning, known as the Tenbun Hokke Rebellion, Nichiren sect was banned in Kyoto until 1542.
