A war between Indians and whites that broke out in New England, North America, in June 1675. Unable to tolerate the invasion of their land by white settlers, the Wampanoag tribe under the command of Metacom (King Philip in English) rose up first, and the Indian tribes of New England joined them to fight against the colonial confederation, with the fighting continuing until August 1676. During this time, the confederation of tribes attacked 52 of the 90 settlements in New England, destroying 12, but suffering heavy casualties and being defeated.
