It is a type of jimaki (ground sprinkling) in the makie (lacquer) decoration technique. It is a thickly sprinkled ground with gold or silver powder, and in the early modern period it was also called kin (gin)ji (gold)ji (ground) or tameji (gold-steeped ground). It is also described as ikakeji (bathed ground) in the 1390 (Meitoku 1) "Kumano Shingu Jinpo Mokuroku" (Catalog of the Treasures of the Kumano Shrine). That it originated in the Heian period is also proven by the fact that in 1029 (Chogen 2), the Minister of the Left, Yorimichi, applied ikakeji to the furnishings of the Shirakawa-in Imperial Court, in the Ruiju Zoyosho (Collection of Documents), and that it was also applied to the swords and weapons of the nobles' ceremonial guards. This tradition flourished during the Kamakura period, and many representative examples have been handed down to the present day, such as the Magakini Kikuraden Makie Suzuribako (Hori-Kiku chrysanthemum mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquer work box) from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, the Katawaguruma Raden Hand Box formerly owned by Lord Matsudaira Fumai (now in the Tokyo National Museum), and the plum blossom inlaid hand box from Mishima Taisha Shrine.
