…a group of German Romantic painters. In 1809, six students from the Vienna Academy, including Overbeck and Franz Pforr (1788-1812), formed the Brotherhood of St. Luke in opposition to academicism. The following year, they moved to the ruins of the Sant'Isidoro monastery in Rome, aiming to serve the religious cause and to collaborate on art, just like medieval painters. They were nicknamed the Nazarenes because of their unusual appearance. …
