…The rib cage is strong because of the ribs, and is well-suited to protecting the two important organs, the lungs and the heart. Furthermore, the rib cage, in cooperation with the diaphragm, expands and contracts the lungs, which cannot expand on their own, and allows air to enter and exit the lungs (this is called ventilation). The weight of the human lungs is about 200g each (for an adult), but the left lung is slightly smaller.
