Toyoyasu - Buan

Year of birth: unknown. A monk of the Ritsu sect in the early Heian period. A native of Mikawa Province (eastern Aichi Prefecture). He studied under Nyoho, who had come to Japan following Ganjin, and entered Toshodaiji Temple. He served as the head priest of the Kaidan-in Temple of Todaiji Temple from 795 to 806, and in 816 he became a risshi and was later promoted to Daisozu. His works include Kairitsu Denrai Shuji Mondo ("Pilgrimage of the Transmission of the Kairitsu" - only the first volume remains), one of the Tencho Imperially Selected Six Honshusho (a set of six sects, Shingon, Hosso, Kegon, Sanron, Ritsu, and Tendai, which were ordered by imperial decree during the reign of Emperor Junna to state their respective doctrines), and Ganjin's biography Ganjin Wajo San'iji ("Ganjin Wajo San'iji" - one volume). He bestowed the precepts on Emperor Heizei, and in 1292 he succeeded Nyoho as the fifth abbot of Toshodaiji Temple, and is said to have renovated the temple buildings. He was posthumously awarded the title of Sojo the year after his death.

平安前期の律宗の僧。三河国(愛知県東部)の人。鑑真に従って来日した如宝に師事し,唐招提寺に入る。延暦14(795)年から大同1(806)年まで東大寺戒壇院の戒和上を勤め,弘仁7(816)年律師となり,のちに大僧都に昇進した。著書には,天長勅撰六本宗書(淳和天皇の代に,真言,法相,華厳,三論,律,天台の六宗に勅を下し各宗の宗旨を述べさせたもの)のひとつである『戒律伝来宗旨問答』3巻(『戒律伝来記』とも。上巻のみ現存),鑑真の伝記『鑑真和上三異事』1巻がある。平城天皇に戒を授け,弘仁6年に如宝の後任として唐招提寺5世となり,伽藍を整備したと伝えられる。死去の翌年に僧正を追贈された。一説に享年77歳。
