A dam on the border between the states of West Bengal and Bihar in northeastern India that holds back the Ganges. It also serves as a railway and road bridge. Construction began in 1963 to increase the water volume of the Hugli River (a tributary of the Ganges), which has the port of Calcutta downstream, and to revitalize the port, whose functionality had deteriorated due to silt accumulation, and was completed in the early 1970s. At the time, Pakistan, which owned what is now Bangladesh, opposed India's unilateral changes to water use, and it became a point of contention between the two countries.
