As shown in Figure 1, machine tools are basically configured to perform linear motion in the X , Y , and Z directions, and rotational motion around each of these axes (these are called motion functions). The machining process, which removes unnecessary parts from a material and creates the shape of a part, is performed by selecting and combining appropriate motion functions from among these (this is called shape-generating motion).
